During vulcanisation, the rubber molecule chains are linked together at different locations by a chemical process, thereby preventing the molecule chains from sliding past each other when force is applied, but returning almost completely to their original position once the force has elapsed.
This springback capability or elasticity is what makes rubber so special. No other material shows such elasticity. For this reason, rubber materials are called elastomers
