Stop rails are designed to act as shock absorbers. When the stop rail is set into vibrational movements resulting from impulses (shocks), it comes to a rest after a few oscillation periods. This type of energy absorption, also called damping, corresponds to a subcritical bearing where the natural frequency of the oscillating system is greater than the frequency of the component that causes the vibration.
